The successful final examination of the first student in the Civil Engineering Double Degree programme jointly run by Széchenyi István University and its Chinese partner, Jiaxing University, marks another milestone in the University’s internationalisation efforts. The young student met the academic requirements with distinction and received her degree with honours.

The Civil Engineering Double Degree programme was initiated a few years ago through the cooperation of Széchenyi István University and Jiaxing University. A distinctive feature of the four-year programme is that students complete the first half of their studies in China and the second half in Győr, earning a degree recognised by both institutions. Participants gain up-to-date knowledge in an international environment through multiple engineering approaches, preparing them for global professional challenges.

The recently graduated Chinese student fulfilled the requirements with exemplary diligence and outstanding performance: her thesis focused on the design of an industrial hall, comparing Chinese and European design standards and regulations. The aim was to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge in practice and to integrate engineering mindsets from both countries. The final examination was passed with distinction, and the degree was awarded with honours. The quality of the examination was further enhanced by the online presence of Professor Guoxin Chen from Jiaxing University, reinforcing the joint academic supervision of the programme.

Zhang Jingjie received her degree with honours. Her academic journey was closely followed from the beginning by Dr János Szép, Dean and the programme’s academic coordinator

Dr János Szép, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Transport Sciences at Széchenyi István University, emphasised that the programme’s first graduate represents not only individual achievement but also the international value of the course. “Our student’s excellent results prove that the double degree programme offers genuine added value. The goal of the programme is precisely to educate such dedicated engineers with an international perspective. The cooperation between the two institutions enables young people to become familiar with multiple engineering approaches and integrate them,” said the Dean.

Zhang Jingjie considered the experiences gained during her studies especially valuable, highlighting the open and supportive environment provided by the lecturers and peers at the University in Győr. “The programme helped not only my professional development but also made me more confident in an international setting. I found the practice-oriented education, the cultural diversity, and the inclusive atmosphere of the community particularly valuable. I will continue my studies in Hungary with a scholarship and plan to pursue an international career in the future. I highly recommend the double degree programme to anyone who wishes to grow and open new horizons,” the student highlighted.

The success of the programme is demonstrated by the arrival of two more Chinese students in Győr this September, which confirms the sustainability and development potential of the initiative.
