Studying at Széchenyi István University is made much more accessible through the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship, offered by the Hungarian government. This opportunity is available to young individuals from approximately 100 countries. In addition, the University of Győr provides their own scholarship as well to talented international students facing difficult circumstances.

The aim of the Stipendium Hungaricum programme is to promote the internationalisation and quality development of Hungarian higher education while enhancing cultural diversity at universities. Hungary has established agreements with nearly 100 countries, enabling young individuals from these regions to apply for the scholarship.

Széchenyi István University has been offering this opportunity for many years. Márta Mészáros, Head of the Mobility and Scholarship Unit at the Centre of International Programmes and Alumni, announced that the University has been granted the Stipendium Hungaricum licence for another three-year period, from 2025 to 2028. Applications for the next academic year are now open and can be accessed at https://stipendiumhungaricum.hu/apply/.

“The scholarship programme offers 44 English-taught programmes, including nine new ones, across nine faculties at our University. For the current academic year, over 4,000 students applied to our Institution. We are confident there will be strong interest again in the next academic year,” said Márta Mészáros, adding that nearly 400 students at the University are currently funded through the Stipendium Hungaricum programme, out of a total of almost 1,000 international students.

Annabella Bihari, Head of the Centre of International Programmes and Alumni, emphasized that even those who do not get the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship should not lose hope. Széchenyi University has established its own SODA scholarship to assist international applicants in difficult circumstances. Detailed information about the SODA scholarship is available at https://admissions.sze.hu/soda-scholarship“This initiative allows us to support high-performing young individuals who face challenges in accessing higher education due to their disadvantaged situations. Applications for the SODA scholarship will open from February to June next year, alongside the general admissions process for self-funded applicants. Successful applicants will receive a 90% tuition fee discount, free accommodation, and basic health care,” said Ms Bihari.

She also highlighted another opportunity: young individuals with Hungarian roots living in the Hungarian diaspora outside Europe can apply for the Diaspora Higher Education Scholarship Programme, which also allows them to study at Széchenyi University. The institution provides additional travel support and opportunities to study the Hungarian language for these students.
