For the third time, Széchenyi István University organised the Road Safety Conference together with its partners. Once again, this much-needed programme provided a platform for presentations, roundtable discussions, and the showcasing of new scientific findings by experts in the field. The organisers’ aim is to provide a long-term forum for domestic professionals, who emphasised the importance of joint action in accident prevention.
The Department of Transport at Széchenyi István University, the Scientific Association for Transport, and the Institute for Transport Sciences and Logistics jointly launched the first Road Safety Conference in Győr in 2023. The founders of the event set the goal of creating a meeting place for experts, researchers, and relevant companies, where they could share their experiences and discuss ideas.
The 3rd Road Safety Conference was recently held at Hotel Famulus with the support of MABISZ, DB Cargo Hungária Ltd., the Győr-Moson-Sopron County Road Accident Prevention Committee, and the MÁV Group. The participants were welcomed by Dr Diána Henézi, Vice-Dean for Education of the Faculty of Architecture Civil Engineering and Transport Sciences, followed by the official opening delivered by Dean of the Faculty, Dr János Szép.
“Transport is a hazardous activity; an accident can happen in an instant. This is why ensuring and guaranteeing road safety is of paramount importance. The human factor plays a key role, since in many cases accidents are caused by inattention or lack of experience. At the same time, humans are not only sources of risk but also, through conscious action, the guarantors of improved safety. Equally important are the state of transport infrastructure and the regulatory framework. Vehicle equipment, data analysis, the specificities of road and rail transport, and accident prevention are also essential topics, all of which are addressed during our conference,” the Dean listed.

Dr Balázs Horváth, Professor and Head of the Department of Transport at the University and Secretary-General of the Scientific Association for Transport (KTE), added that the event had been established two years ago because, although enhancing road safety and reducing accidents are pressing tasks, professionals in the field had lacked a dedicated forum where they could discuss current issues on a broad scale.
“We are already at the third edition, and it is our intention to continue to provide space for this highly significant professional exchange in the long term,” he said. The Head of Department also drew attention to the fact that next May, Europe’s largest transport conference will be held in Budapest, where safety will also be one of the main topics.

Dr Ramón Farkas, Head of the Life Insurance Division of the Association of Hungarian Insurance Companies, highlighted that this year marked the ninth edition of the “Safety Week” programme series, organised with the broad cooperation of the relevant organisations. Hoping for similar partnerships, he proposed to the organisers that at each conference they select a few key issues to focus on jointly between two events, since collective action can contribute significantly to improving road safety.

Tamás Berta, President of the Road Safety Section of KTE, expressed his delight that the Győr event had succeeded in establishing a tradition. He noted that alongside Safety Week, the European Mobility Week also coincided with the week of the conference, drawing further attention to the issue. With the slogan “Mobility Belongs to Everyone”, he pointed to the importance of eliminating “transport poverty” and the associated regulatory challenges.
“It is our task to make alternatives attractive, whether in relation to rail transport, cycling, or micro mobility. A crucial element of service quality is that the given form of transport should be safe. Our search for joint solutions likewise aims to achieve this as effectively as possible,” he concluded.

In his plenary lecture, Viktor Váczi, Spokesperson of the MÁV Group, reported on the most important measures in railway accident prevention, as well as on their campaign “Get Home Safely!”. Afterwards, experts discussed the key issues of road safety in roundtable discussions and section lectures.
