SZE’s refurbished Cuha utca Hall of Residence will provide state-of-the-art accommodation for more than 300 students from the start of the new academic year. The University modernised the building, which previously served as a workers’ hostel in Győr, using its own funds, and it was unveiled during a press tour on 1st September.
Improving student accommodation is one of Széchenyi István University’s key objectives. Accordingly, the University terminated the rental agreement for the building on Cuha Street – which had been operating as a workers’ hostel for almost ten years – to take the premises back under its own management and commence a full-scale refurbishment this summer. The investment was funded by the University’s own resources amounting to 195 million forints: the refurbishment of 52 apartments has made 316 beds available.

The renewed hall of residence was presented to the press by Gergő Lőrincz, Director of Services and Branding at Széchenyi István University; Klaudia Varga, Managing Director of Uni-Famulus Kft., the University-owned company undertaking the construction work and managing the building; and Dávid Vályi Nagy, President of the Students’ Union.

Highlighting the background to the investment, Gergő Lőrincz emphasized that an increasing number of young people beyond the borders of Győr-Moson-Sopron County, and from more distant parts of the country, are choosing the University. Furthermore, the international student community, which represents 90 countries, is growing year-by-year. “Opening the Hall of Residence on Cuha utca is an important part of the process whereby student services are continually expanded alongside the University’s development. Besides providing a suitable residential background, it is also important for Győr itself. University students fuel demand for local services and contribute to a more vibrant city life. Ultimately, their future expertise and presence in the labour market will also strengthen the region’s economy,” – he emphasised.
Klaudia Varga outlined the practical details of the refurbishment and the principles governing the building’s operation. She explained that the summer works had been carried out within a tight timeframe to ensure that the facility could welcome students back by the start of the new academic year.
“During construction, we aimed to create a hall of residence that could be operated cost-effectively whilst maintaining an appropriate standard of quality in the long-term, which meets the residents’ expectations and today’s requirements. As a part of this, alongside the modernisation of the accommodation we placed great emphasis on developing security and property protection systems, bearing in mind potential risks. Access is granted via an entrance gate operated by card and fingerprint, which is monitored by security staff 24 hours a day,” she said.
Dávid Vályi Nagy pointed out that, for many young people, affordable accommodation is not merely a matter of convenience, but one of the basic prerequisites for pursuing their higher education. “This also has a major impact on how focused a student can be on their studies, how actively they can get involved in University life and how comfortable they feel at the University. Therefore, the reopening of the hall of residence at Cuha utca means far more than simply creating over 300 places: for many of them it makes their university years more predictable,” he said.

The University thus provides students with almost 3,000 places in halls of residence, located on the central campus, on Mészáros Lőrinc utca, Budai út and Cuha utca.
