The SZE team concluded the 16th European Universities Rowing Championships with one silver and one bronze medal, as well as a number of strong finishes in the finals. Eszter Fehérvári finished second in the women’s single sculls, while Márk Barabás and Zsombor Balog won the bronze medal in the men’s lightweight pairs.
Lake Jarun in Zagreb recently hosted the 16th European Universities Rowing Championship, at which SZE’s athletes won two medals and secured several places in the finals, finishing among the continent’s best in a number of events.
The finest SZE medal went to Eszter Fehérvári, who finished second in the women’s single sculls. In the men’s lightweight pairs final, Márk Barabás and Zsombor Balog won the bronze medal in an extremely close race.

Lili Romsics and Eszter Holpert also came close to the podium, placing fourth in the women’s coxless pairs. Mátyás Demkó crossed the line fifth in the men’s lightweight single sculls, while the mixed quadruple sculls crew comprising Lili Romsics, Eszter Holpert, Péter László Gasztonyi and Ádám Csizmadia also took fifth place.
In the men’s coxless pair, Barnabás Gasztonyi and Dániel Pintér finished sixth, while Péter László Gasztonyi and Ádám Csizmadia took seventh place. Olivér Boros also placed seventh in the men’s single sculls. In the same event, Attila Nagy came tenth and Dániel Pintér eleventh, while Zsombor Balog and Mátyás Demkó crossed the line in eleventh place in the men’s lightweight double sculls.

The closing ceremony of the continental championship also featured a special moment for Hungarian university rowing. At the ceremony, Dr Zoltán Alföldi, a lecturer and rowing coach at SZE, represented Hungary on behalf of the Hungarian University Sports Federation (MEFS) and the Hungarian Rowing Federation. With the handover of the EUSA flag, the baton for hosting the next European Universities Rowing Championship was passed to Hungary. The continental championship will take place in Sukoró on Lake Velence, in 2027.
