Széchenyi István University is becoming an increasingly significant international player in the field of sustainability: the institution has made remarkable progress in the latest ranking published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), demonstrating not only that it follows but also shapes global trends in responsible operation.
QS, one of the world’s most prestigious higher education rankings organizations, released its latest sustainability ranking on 18 November, bringing another international success for Széchenyi István University. The institution is placed 721st, marking a substantial improvement of 168 positions compared to last year. This achievement is even more noteworthy considering that more than 25,000 universities operate worldwide.
The list assesses institutions’ environmental and social impact as well as the quality of their governance processes, in alignment with ESG standards. The compilers once again evaluated universities’ actual, data-supported contributions to sustainability, with particular attention to institutional responsibility and the promotion of equality.
“For our University, sustainability is not merely a metric but a long-term commitment that shapes our educational, research and operational strategies. This significant advancement demonstrates that we are on the right path: our efforts in environmental responsibility, ensuring equality, and maintaining high-quality governance are becoming increasingly visible and recognized at the international level. We are proud that Széchenyi University has joined the ranks of the world’s leading higher education institutions in sustainability,” stated Dr Eszter Lukács, Vice President for International Affairs and Strategic Relations and Head of the Sustainability Competence Centre.
The institution also appears on two additional QS rankings: it is placed between 1001–1200 on the global list and is among the top 400 on the European ranking.
