The Széchenyi István University team, Uni Győr Sharks, recently triumphed in the Hungarian University and College National American Football Championships (MEFOB). The team achieved a resounding victory despite the absence of three key players, who could not take part as they were selected for the Hungarian national team.
The Hungarian University and College National American Football Championship (MEFOB) was organised recently by the University of Szeged and the Hungarian American Football Association. During the competition, Széchenyi István University’s team, the Uni Győr Sharks, twice confidently defeated their major rival, the University of Szeged – first in the preliminaries and then in the semi-finals (18–6; 16–6). In the final, they faced Óbuda University and secured victory with a score of 26–12.

The Széchenyi István University team, the Uni Győr Sharks, led by coach Kurt Page, won the American Football MEFOB. The players were accompanied by the cheerleaders from Győr, who also participated in the MEFOB
“At Széchenyi István University, sport is given special attention, which has also greatly contributed to the development of American football in Győr. We participated in this year’s MEFOB with around forty Hungarian and international students. It was a bittersweet challenge that two current and one former student of the University could not join us because they were invited to the Hungarian national team,” said Attila Baldauf, Vice-President of the Győr Sharks. He added that the players were joined by the cheerleaders as well, since within the collaboration between the club and the University, the cheerleading division is also represented at MEFOB by student-athletes.
He highlighted that out of the four university-level American football championships held so far, Széchenyi István University has won two and the University of Szeged the other two. “More and more young people are becoming involved in our sport, and among our University’s students, there are some for whom American football played a decisive role in their choice of institution. The result we have now achieved clearly demonstrates the strength of our cooperation, and I am confident that we will continue to achieve great success together in the future,” he concluded.
