SZE is to replace four lifts at its academic building in Győr with new ones. The work will be carried out in two phases to ensure at least some lifts remain operational at all times. According to the plans, work is scheduled to begin in January 2027, with all four new lifts expected to be fully operational by the start of the 2027/28 academic year.
SZE is constantly developing its infrastructure in order to provide a modern, safe and comfortable environment for its students and staff. As part of this, the four lifts in the academic building in Győr are being replaced, a project the university is self-funding. The timing of the project is driven by both the age and the technical condition of the lifts: the reliable operation of the equipment, which has been in use for several decades, now requires significant maintenance costs. By installing modern lifts, the university aims to substantially improve operational safety. Preparations are already under way for the upgrade, which is expected to cost over 100 million forints.
As one of the busiest hubs on the Győr campus, the academic building sees high footfall from students and staff every day.
“We are scheduling the works so that they cause as little disruption as possible to the university’s day-to-day operations. The dismantling of the existing lifts will take several weeks and will involve significant noise, so we are scheduling this work to take place outside term time. It is also important to ensure that there are always lifts available for use in the building while work is underway” – said Dr Árpád Tóth, Chief Financial Officer at SZE.
He added that the first phase, at the beginning of 2027, will see one red and one grey lift replaced, while the remaining two stay in service. According to the plans, the first two new lifts – once regulatory approval and operating licences are granted – are expected to be operational by mid-March.
Work on the remaining two lifts is scheduled to begin after the spring exam period. As with the first phase, a key priority is ensuring that noisy work disrupts the teaching period as little as possible. According to the plans, the final pair of lifts will be completed by August 2027, meaning all four will be available to the university community by the start of the 2027/28 academic year.
