From September, the Cuha Street building of Széchenyi István University in Győr will once again operate as a student residence. The institution is renovating the property using its own resources after it had functioned as a workers’ hostel under an external leaseholder in recent years, enabling it to serve students once again from September.
Improving student accommodation is one of the key priorities of Széchenyi István University. In line with this objective, the institution has terminated the lease agreement for the Cuha Street building, which had operated as a workers’ hostel for almost a decade, resumed direct management of the property, and begun a comprehensive refurbishment programme. As a result of the investment, the facility will once again fulfil its original purpose by providing accommodation for students from September onwards.
The renovation works, which commenced on 1 July, include the creation of modern accommodation facilities as well as the installation of up-to-date security and asset protection systems. The development, financed entirely from the University’s own resources at a cost of HUF 195 million, is expected to be completed by the end of August, allowing students to move into the refurbished residence at the start of the new academic year.

Gergő Lőrincz, Director of Services and Branding, highlighted that the University’s growing national and international appeal is attracting an increasing number of young people. This rising popularity is reflected in the fact that around half of last year’s first-year students came from Győr-Moson-Sopron County and the three neighbouring counties, while the remainder enrolled from other parts of Hungary. The international student community, representing nearly 90 countries, is also expanding year by year, supported by the institution’s achievements in global university rankings. All of this is increasing demand for student accommodation.
“The refurbishment of the Cuha Street building will improve students’ living conditions and help us ensure a high-quality environment for those studying with us over the long term. The presence of university students is of great value to Győr and the wider region: they generate growing demand for local services, contribute to a more vibrant urban life, and support regional economic development through their knowledge and future participation in the labour market,” emphasised Gergő Lőrincz.
According to Dávid Vályi Nagy, President of the University Student Union, the investment addresses one of the students’ most important needs. “Affordable student accommodation is not merely a matter of convenience; for many students, it is one of the fundamental prerequisites for access to higher education. The reopening of the Cuha Street building will provide safe and predictable accommodation for more than 300 young people,” he said. “For this reason, the Student Union has supported the project from the outset, as we firmly believe that stable housing is one of the most important foundations of academic success, social integration, and a strong connection to university life.”
