The Digital Development Centre of Sz\u00e9chenyi Istv\u00e1n University also took part in the development, with its experts contributing to speeding up data entry. The internationally recognised physician gave a lecture to a packed audience on this healthcare technology innovation at the University\u2019s Gy\u0151r Innovation Park.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, Dr Istv\u00e1n Pet\u00e1k, molecular pharmacologist, G\u00e1bor D\u00e9nes Prize-winning researcher, founder of Oncompass Medicine and Boston-based Genomate Health, and research professor at Sz\u00e9chenyi Istv\u00e1n University, gave a lecture entitled&nbsp;<em>\u201cThe Revolution of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;at the Gy\u0151r Innovation Park. The renowned researcher focuses on precision oncology and the personalised application of molecularly targeted anti-cancer drugs. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41698-025-00943-4\">latest results of his research team were published in May this year<\/a>, examining the effectiveness of the artificial intelligence they developed. Their work has been recognised by several Hungarian and international organisations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology and Digital Europe, an alliance of European technology companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/admissions.sze.hu\/images\/News\/2025_10\/Milestone%20in%20medidne\/k%C3%A9p1.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Dr Istv\u00e1n Pet\u00e1k, research professor at Sz\u00e9chenyi Istv\u00e1n University, gave an inspiring lecture on his achievements in cancer research at the University\u2019s Gy\u0151r Innovation Park (Photo: Andr\u00e1s Adorj\u00e1n)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>As an introduction to the event, Dr P\u00e9ter Prukner, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Informatics and Electrical Engineering at Sz\u00e9chenyi Istv\u00e1n University and Head of the Medtech &amp; Sporttech Division of the Digital Development Centre, presented their healthcare technology developments. These included a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.sze.hu\/news-1\/medical-transmission-system-developed-by-sze-researchers-awarded-utility-model-protection\">surgical streaming platform<\/a>&nbsp;capable of involving several hundred participants, an eye-tracking device, and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.sze.hu\/ai-innovation-at-szechenyi-university-supports-at-home-rehabilitation?ckw=c3Ryb2tl\">rehabilitation application<\/a>&nbsp;supporting recovery at home. The institution also contributed to the success of the project led by Dr Pet\u00e1k. \u201cThe software operating with artificial intelligence requires vast amounts of data, but entering information available in different formats was often carried out manually, which is extremely time-consuming. Our task was to significantly accelerate the process of digitalisation, so we developed an optical character recognition engine that provides data in a structured way for the application,\u201d he summarised.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7f5c56_8e9a961192fb4aeaac0a143fff426345~mv2.jpg\/v1\/fill\/w_740,h_493,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7f5c56_8e9a961192fb4aeaac0a143fff426345~mv2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>The healthcare technology developments of Sz\u00e9chenyi Istv\u00e1n University were presented by Dr P\u00e9ter Prukner, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Informatics and Electrical Engineering, Head of the Medtech &amp; Sporttech Division of the Digital Development Centre (Photo: Andr\u00e1s Adorj\u00e1n)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the beginning of his lecture, Dr Pet\u00e1k emphasised the great significance of Sz\u00e9chenyi University\u2019s support for medicine through its technological developments. As he noted, the development in Gy\u0151r, relevant to his research, had made data entry faster and more reliable.&nbsp;<em>\u201cI have been working for thirty years to shed light on the causes of cancer. If we can determine the molecular cause, we can use a drug that eliminates the triggering factor instead of merely treating the symptoms. The goal is to detect which of the hundreds of possible genetic mutations causes the disease in each patient and to identify the most effective targeted drug against it,\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;he stressed, before outlining the decades-long path he and his colleagues had travelled. Along the way, they had to overcome many technological challenges to reach the point where they are today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/7f5c56_39b9cdff1d6042f3a4ee3b3efa83422d~mv2.jpg\/v1\/fill\/w_740,h_493,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_avif,quality_auto\/7f5c56_39b9cdff1d6042f3a4ee3b3efa83422d~mv2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>The lecture attracted great interest, with the audience filling the Main Hall of the Gy\u0151r Innovation Park (Photo: Andr\u00e1s Adorj\u00e1n)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cArtificial intelligence has opened up new horizons in medicine and plays a key role in achieving personalised medicine. With its help, our software makes thousands of calculations to infer which drug is most suitable for a patient\u2019s specific genetic mutations,\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;he explained. In his lecture, he presented a study showing that the method contributed to a correct decision in 69 % of cases when choosing among eleven available drugs. He highlighted that a study based on five years of clinical follow-up of lung cancer patients also confirmed that artificial intelligence can effectively support doctors in selecting personalised therapy. He also referred to the fact that the technology plays an important role in many other areas of medicine and may also help reduce the costs of drug production in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the research professor expressed his gratitude for Sz\u00e9chenyi University\u2019s involvement in the project:&nbsp;<em>\u201cWhat we are working on together is new not only in Gy\u0151r but also in Boston.
