Students of Sz\u00e9chenyi Istv\u00e1n University won one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals at the European University Games held in Debrecen and Miskolc. With this, it concluded the massive sports event as the third most successful Hungarian institution.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debrecen and Miskolc hosted the European University Games from July 12 to 24, with the participation of 3800 athletes from 428 universities in 35 countries. The event, featuring 17 sports, saw the largest Hungarian delegation of all time, with nearly 600 students from 22 domestic higher education institutions. Seventeen competitors represented Sz\u00e9chenyi Istv\u00e1n University of Gy\u0151r in kickboxing, judo, and 3×3 basketball, achieving podium finishes<\/a> in all three sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brightest medal for the Gy\u0151r delegation was won by P\u00e9ter Petrovics, who earned a gold medal in the full-contact 86 kg category in kickboxing after defeating his Turkish opponent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The judokas (judo practitioners) of Sz\u00e9chenyi Istv\u00e1n University also excelled, with two delegation members returning home with medals. Andr\u00e1s Vida achieved second place in the 66 kg weight category among more than 30 competitors, while Botond Bence Szered\u00e1s won a bronze medal in the 73 kg category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 3×3 basketball, the women’s team from Gy\u0151r secured third place as the best Hungarian team. Dr. Istv\u00e1n Barthalos’s students defeated their German opponents to reach the top four teams in the tournament, where they first lost to their Spanish rivals. However, in the bronze match, they won in a dramatic overtime game against the Ukrainian girls, who had previously eliminated the Hungarian University of Physical Education and Sports Science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding the participation of Sz\u00e9chenyi Istv\u00e1n University, Tam\u00e1s Gy\u00f6m\u00f6rei, head of the institution’s Sports and Recreation Centre, expressed his immense gratitude to the athletes. He noted that despite their studies, they committed to several months of preparation, training sessions, training camps, and preliminary competitions to represent the institution successfully. „Knowing that such a level of achievement involves a journey of ten to fifteen years filled with sacrifices, setbacks, and dedication, I believe they represent an outstanding value that sets an example for other students and faculty alike. I hope that in the future, we can continue to provide our elite athletes with an environment that allows them to achieve similar or even greater successes in both their sports careers and studies,”<\/em> he emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seventeen athletes represented Sz\u00e9chenyi Istv\u00e1n University at the European University Games. They included Titanilla \u00c1brah\u00e1m, Blanka Darida, R\u00e9ka Vir\u00e1g Erd\u00e9lyi, Zolt\u00e1n K\u0151halmi, Attila Olasz, Botond Bence Szered\u00e1s, Rich\u00e1rd T\u00f3th, and Andr\u00e1s Vida (judo); P\u00e9ter Petrovics (kickboxing); Borb\u00e1la B\u00e1nszegi, Emma Mih\u00e1ly, Lilla Anna Rozm\u00e1n, and Fanni Baffy (women’s 3×3 basketball); Tam\u00e1s Hagen, L\u00e1szl\u00f3 S\u00f3lyom, B\u00e1lint T\u00f3th-Erdei, and Csan\u00e1d Bakon (men’s 3×3 basketball).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hungary were top of the medal tables, winning 16 gold, 18 silver, and 24 bronze medals. Sz\u00e9chenyi Istv\u00e1n University contributed significantly to this success, ranking as the third-best domestic institution, tied with Corvinus University of Budapest, following the Hungarian University of Physical Education and Sport Sciences and E\u00f6tv\u00f6s Lor\u00e1nd University.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
