From 1 September, the Gy\u0151r campus of Sz\u00e9chenyi Istv\u00e1n University was once again filled with first-year students. During the four-day Freshers\u2019 Week, they not only got to know one another but also received vital information on all the most important issues affecting them. Among other things, they attended presentations about the fundamentals of the educational system, scholarships and funding or sports opportunities. During the \u201cprogramme-specific orientation\u201d sessions organised by the Students\u2019 Union, everybody received first-hand the most important information related to their programme, advice and tips on their respective courses from upper-year students, lecturers and mentors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Much like Freshers\u2019 Meet-up, the main goal of Freshers\u2019 Week is to welcome newcomers into the University community, introducing them to the institutional traditions while giving them a taste of student life. It all takes place in teams, through playful activities, in competition with each other \u2013 with evening parties to wind down after a busy day.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cEvery year, we work with the organisers to ensure an unforgettable experience for freshers. This year, too, our goal was to make them feel safe in a positive atmosphere<\/em>\u201d, pointed out Csenge K\u00e1lm\u00e1n, Freshers\u2019 Week coordinator. She noted that special attention was also given to international students, who generally participated in the programmes alongside their Hungarian peers. She added: \u201cOnce again, we organised an orientation day where we provided assistance with everything from enrolment to opening a bank account.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFreshers\u2019 Week is the largest event organised by the Students\u2019 Union, the result of a six-month preparation work by nearly a hundred organisers\u201d \u2013 explained D\u00e1vid V\u00e1lyi Nagy, president of the Union. \u201cWe work with several partners, many of whom contribute to making the event even more colourful with stands and activities. I must especially highlight the support of the University\u2019s senior management, without which Freshers\u2019 Week would not have been realised<\/em>\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On behalf of the University, Professor Dr Eszter Luk\u00e1cs, Vice-President for International Affairs and Strategic Relations at Sz\u00e9chenyi University, while representing the Gy\u0151r Municipality, Dr P\u00e9ter T\u00f3th, Deputy Mayor welcomed the freshers. <\/em>(Photo: Andr\u00e1s Adorj\u00e1n)<\/p>\n\n\n\n In keeping with tradition, once again this year, the Albert K\u00e1zm\u00e9r Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences organised its own camp for first-year students, held during Freshers\u2019 Week. (Photo: Gergely Nagy)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gyula Viktor Ferling, who is studying to become an electrical engineer, came to Sz\u00e9chenyi Istv\u00e1n University from Tatab\u00e1nya. As he explained, it was primarily the practice-oriented nature of the education that convinced him. \u201cI attended the Open Days twice, and I found the lecturers very accessible, really friendly and helpful\u201d<\/em> \u2013 he said. <\/em>Regarding Freshers\u2019 Week, he added that those who are able to participate in the event will find it much easier to overcome the first challenges at the University.<\/p>\n\n\n Gyula Viktor Ferling (Photo: M\u00e1t\u00e9 Dud\u00e1s)<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt\u2019s an irreplaceable experience<\/em> \u2013 you shouldn\u2019t miss it,\u201d <\/em>said \u00c1kos Kozenkow from Kom\u00e1rom, who got to know many of his fellow business informatics students during the event. Inspired by this positive experience, he has also decided to apply to join the Student Union \u2013 a move his older brother, who also attends the University, had encouraged him to make.<\/p>\n\n\n \u00c1kos Kozenkow (Photo: M\u00e1t\u00e9 Dud\u00e1s)<\/p>\n\n\n\n For Luca \u0150sze from Sopron, Sz\u00e9chenyi Istv\u00e1n University was the only choice. \u201cI already liked the campus during the open day, but now that we\u2019ve been given a tour, I\u2019m even more convinced that I applied to the best university possible,\u201d<\/em> said the student, who was admitted to the Business Administration and Management programme. She felt the atmosphere during Freshers\u2019 Week was the highlight. \u201cThe community was welcoming, and the organisers did everything they could for us. From the very first moment, I felt like I was in the right place,\u201d<\/em> she added.<\/p>\n\n\n Luca \u0150sze (Photo: M\u00e1t\u00e9 Dud\u00e1s)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Esraa Nannoush from Egypt, who completed her undergraduate degree in her home city of Alexandria, has joined the international student community. \u201cI chose Gy\u0151r to continue my studies because I read positive reviews about the University everywhere. The University\u2019s ranking also helped me make my decision, as did its ideal location,\u201d<\/em> she emphasised. \u201cWe\u2019re glad we could be part of the event; we enjoyed the programmes, and the information sessions were very helpful in getting our bearings.
