Improving student accommodation is one of Sz\u00e9chenyi Istv\u00e1n University\u2019s key objectives. Accordingly, the University terminated the rental agreement for the building on Cuha Street \u2013 which had been operating as a workers\u2019 hostel for almost ten years \u2013 to take the premises back under its own management and commence a full-scale refurbishment this summer. The investment was funded by the University\u2019s own resources amounting to 195 million forints: the refurbishment of 52 apartments has made 316 beds available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The renovations were carried out in two blocks. (Photo: Andr\u00e1s Adorj\u00e1n)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Highlighting the background to the investment, Gerg\u0151 L\u0151rincz emphasized that an increasing number of young people beyond the borders of Gy\u0151r-Moson-Sopron County, and from more distant parts of the country, are choosing the University. Furthermore, the international student community, which represents 90 countries, is growing year-by-year. \u201cOpening the Hall of Residence on Cuha utca is an important part of the process whereby student services are continually expanded alongside the University\u2019s development. Besides providing a suitable residential background, it is also important for Gy\u0151r itself. University students fuel demand for local services and contribute to a more vibrant city life. Ultimately, their future expertise and presence in the labour market will also strengthen the region\u2019s economy,\u201d \u2013 he emphasised.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Klaudia Varga outlined the practical details of the refurbishment and the principles governing the building\u2019s operation. She explained that the summer works had been carried out within a tight timeframe to ensure that the facility could welcome students back by the start of the new academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDuring construction, we aimed to create a hall of residence that could be operated cost-effectively whilst maintaining an appropriate standard of quality in the long-term, which meets the residents\u2019 expectations and today\u2019s requirements. As a part of this, alongside the modernisation of the accommodation we placed great emphasis on developing security and property protection systems, bearing in mind potential risks. Access is granted via an entrance gate operated by card and fingerprint, which is monitored by security staff 24 hours a day,\u201d<\/em> she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n D\u00e1vid V\u00e1lyi Nagy pointed out that, for many young people, affordable accommodation is not merely a matter of convenience, but one of the basic prerequisites for pursuing their higher education. \u201cThis also has a major impact on how focused a student can be on their studies, how actively they can get involved in University life and how comfortable they feel at the University. Therefore, the reopening of the hall of residence at Cuha utca means far more than simply creating over 300 places: for many of them it makes their university years more predictable,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The hall of residence welcomes students in two- and three-bed rooms, as well as larger accommodation units suitable for accommodating up to four people.
